Are you wondering what is the best mattress for back pain in India? Do you want to sleep on a mattress that treats your body aches and helps you get up refreshed every morning? Or even if you don’t have chronic back pain, are you looking for a mattress that provides you utmost support and prevents any issues? In this article, I’ll share the five foolproof ways to find the right orthopedic mattress for you!

You Are Not Alone in This Suffering!

Did you know that approximately 80% of the Indian adult population suffers from low back pain? Furthermore, this low back pain not only affects their sleep quality but also brings psychological problems for around 24% of them and affects the social life of approximately 28% of people? So, if you are disturbed thinking you’re the only one, let me tell you — you are not alone.

Even I experienced terrible back pain for over three years when I started working. Initially, I thought that my sedentary lifestyle was the root cause but even if I brought many drastic changes, the pain didn’t seem to go. It was later then I got to know how mattresses affect our spinal health.

Once I figured out the right orthopedic mattress for me (of course, after months of research and trial), I am now happy to help other sleepers find the best mattress for back pain in India. After all, I know it is not easy to find your ideal mattress, especially when you have some sort of pain. If you want to know how you can find the right orthopedic mattress, you are in the right place.

How to Find the Best Mattress for Back Pain in India?

If you want to purchase the best mattress for back pain in India, here are five important things you need to consider:

1. Consider Natural Latex & Ditch the Rest

I know it might seem crazy to not hear “memory foam” as the best mattress for back pain but once you know the difference between the two, you will agree with me. Coir, memory foam, and natural latex mattresses are the three most commonly sold mattresses in India that are marketed as “orthopedic mattresses”.

However, looking at the pros and cons of each, sleep experts and mattress consultants recommend natural latex as the best orthopedic mattress. This is because coir mattresses are quite firm and tend to lose their shape within a few years or even months which in turn doesn’t provide the right support required for treating chronic back pain.

Furthermore, memory foam mattresses are supportive but they are neither eco-friendly nor breathable. Also, they are very soft and make the sleeper sink into the mattress rather than pushing him up. These mattresses trap body heat making the sleeper exhausted and sweaty at night. This discomfort leads to exaggerated body pain.

Natural latex on the other hand is medium-firm, highly breathable, and cushions the body perfectly. It aligns the spinal curvature in a straight line and instantly pushes the body upwards when the sleeper lies on it.

2. Choose the Right Thickness

Orthopedic mattresses are generally available in three thickness options viz. 5 inches, 6 inches, and 8 inches. Generally, a sleeper should opt for 6 inches orthopedic mattress if he/she has a normal body weight. I do not recommend the 5 inches variant at all. However, if you are obese, you must opt for the 8 inches variant.

3. Don’t Ignore the Certifications

While buying the mattress, you must ensure it is hypoallergenic and 100% safe to sleep on. Checking the certifications enables you to be assured of the quality and the additives used inside the mattress. For a natural latex mattress, you must consider a brand that is at least OEKO-TEX Standard 100, eco-INSTITUT, BRIT QUALIS, and ISO certified.

4. Don’t Make a Rushed Decision & Prioritize Free Trial

Most importantly, I recommend investing your time in researching the right mattress for you even if takes a few more days or even weeks. Making a hurried decision will only cause more body pain to you. Carefully compare as many brands as you come across and understand the pros and cons of each. Most importantly, shortlist only a mattress brand that offers at least 30 nights of a free trial.

5. Don’t Opt for a Cheap Mattress

You can find orthopedic mattresses anywhere between the range of Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 40,000 in India. Although coir and memory foam mattresses are cheaper than natural latex mattresses, you can find many cheap latex mattresses too that claim to be “100% natural”.

Firstly, 100% natural latex is certified and quite expensive. Secondly, only synthetic or blended latex can be cheap as it is made using toxins and cheap additives. As everyone may not have a high budget, it can be sometimes difficult to purchase an expensive natural latex mattress. But trust me, it is totally worth the purchase.

Furthermore, if you prefer cheap quality just to save money, you will end up regretting your decision because that mattress will not provide you the orthopedic support you are looking for. Instead, I recommend purchasing the mattress at the EMI facility if you find it expensive but choose the best one as it is going to last you for a lifetime!

The Bottom Line

I hope I helped you understand how you can find the best mattress for back pain in India. Trust me, all it takes is a little more research about the mattress you are buying and you can soon see the change. Just in case you wanted to know, I switched to Morning Owl’s 100% Natural Latex Orthopedic Mattress which provided optimum support to my spinal column and helped me sleep deeply without any discomfort.
