Is It Possible to Find a 100% Organic Mattress as They Claim?
One of the biggest confusions for informed-enough mattress buyers is whether they should opt for an organic mattress or a natural one. Specifically talking about a latex mattress, do you think an organic mattress really exists? In this article, I have tried explaining the difference between organic vs. natural latex mattresses so that you can know where you can find organic mattresses — if they really exist.
What is a 100% Natural Latex Mattress?
A natural latex mattress is made using a 100% natural form of latex without the use of any chemicals. In such a mattress, latex sap is derived from the Rubber tree by tapping it hygienically and ensuring no toxin is involved at any stage — from the collection of sap to processing or manufacturing.
What is an Organic Latex Mattress?
Organic latex is the purest form of latex. Hence, if you see that a mattress is certified to be an organic latex mattress, it means that it has been made by using latex that was extracted from rubber trees that were grown without any pesticides or chemical fertilizers for at least four years.
Similarities Between Natural & Organic Latex Mattresses
Both natural as well as organic latex mattresses are eco-friendly, natural, and have a sustainable and 100% safe manufacturing process. An organic mattress is 100% natural but a natural mattress is not 100% organic. This is because organic mattresses have 100% organic practices and use additives without any chemical content in them.
However, a natural, as well as organic mattress, is safe to sleep on and does not harm the environment in any way. Both these mattresses ensure they are not contaminated in any way. Their nature-friendliness not just protects you against allergies and diseases but these mattresses also promote deep sleep, pain relief, and have excellent air circulation.
How do you know if a mattress is organic?
Although there are very limited organic mattress brands in India, you can check if you come across a mattress that calls itself organic by looking at its certifications. A GOLS certification can prove that the latex is 100% organic.
What certifications to look for 100% natural latex mattress?
If you come across a mattress that calls itself 100% natural, you must at least look for the following certifications:
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100
- eco-INSTITUT
- BRIT QUALIS, and
- ISO
Is an organic mattress really possible and easily available?
Well, there are mixed opinions about it but I don’t think so. GOLS certification is given when a mattress is at least made up of 95% certified organic raw material. So, if you are purchasing a mattress that’s claiming to be 100% organic, you cannot blindly trust the brand. This is because it is impossible to turn raw latex sap into foam and later into a mattress without using any additives.
Although the additives used in a 100% natural or organic mattress are very safe and not at all harmful, they are still additives and not 100% free from chemicals. So, you cannot really find a 100% organic mattress really.
This is why it is extremely expensive and difficult to find a lot of options if you are looking for an organic mattress made up of latex. Hence, due to similarities in their overall comfort, support, and safety, you can easily go for a 100% natural latex because organic mattresses are not really present in India!
